During Pokémon Direct on Thursday, January 9th, Nintendo announced that Pokémon Sword and Shield would be receiving an Expansion Pass. The expansion pass will be split into two versions, one for Pokémon Sword and one for Pokémon Shield. Each version will feature exclusive Pokémon, places, characters, and more depending on the version of the game you own.
The Isle of Armor takes place on an island off the shores of the Galar region. In this new area, you will find Pokémon that were unattainable in the current Galar region. The Isle of Armor has a Pokémon dojo and introduces Mustard, former Pokémon Champion, and mentor to the great Champion Leon.
The expansion also introduces new rivals: Klara, a poison type user for Pokémon Sword, and Avery, a psychic type user for Pokémon Shield.
The expansion also introduces Kubfu, a legendary fighting-type Pokémon that evolves into Urshifu, a Pokémon that has two unique fighting styles to choose from as well as a Gigantax form.
The expansion will also bring a bevy of new fashion items and cosmetics.
The Crown Tundra takes you from sunny beaches and shorelines of The Armor Isle to a beautiful, yet cold region. This region will also introduce new Pokémon not found in the other regions. Based on the theme of exploration, this area promises to provide a sense of adventure.
The Crown Tundra introduces Calyrex, a psychic and grass-type Legendary Pokémon that used to rule parts of this region.
A new form of cooperative play will be introduced with The Crown Tundra. Friends will be able to explore dungeons together in this region — home to past Legendary Pokémon with new Dynamax forms along with never before seen Legendary Pokémon. More than 200 additional Pokémon will be introduced!
Like with the Isle of Armor, The Crown Tundra will feature all-new fashion and cosmetic items.
Nintendo announced that players would be able to import Pokémon from previous games, as long as they also appear in Pokémon Sword and Shield, using Pokémon HOME. This includes Pokémon Bank and Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. Pokémon HOME will launch next month in February.
Finally, a software update for Pokémon Sword and Shield went up yesterday. The update includes new Gigantamax Pokémon, and if you head to Wedgehurst station, you will encounter Klara in Pokémon Sword or Avery in Pokémon Shield. A Galarian Slowpoke will also appear, catch him and add him to your roster! This Galarian Slowpoke will be able to evolve with items found in The Armor Isle as well as The Crown Tundra.
The Isle of Armor will be available June 2020 and The Crown Tundra will be available this fall.
